Pilsen has a long industrial history and is surrounded by bustling highways and railways. As a result, the land has high levels of lead and mercury.
Because the team's vision was a play area safe for all ages, we had to make sure that we would not be exposing children to hazardous toxins. The group consulted an environmental engineer from Gabrielle Environmental Services, and a number of solutions were considered.
Ultimately, a layer of gravel and geotextile fabric was laid on top of the existing soil. This created a barrier between the contaminated soil and the new, clean soil added on top.
Families can now interact safely with the garden's native plants and insects.
