At the Bronzeville Community Garden, produce is grown to be used by the community.
Bronzeville residents can pick watermelons, squash, herbs, and other produce at any time.
But because few local residents using the space had gardening experience, some of the produce was being picked too early.
Instead of locking the garden up, lead cultivator Lupe Garcia held a series of weekly harvesting classes, free and open to the public, to teach community members how and when to pick produce.
Now, the plants are healthier than ever, and residents are enjoying knowing how to be better stewards of the garden’s bounty.
