On the Southeast Side, youth are playing a crucial role in promoting local climate action. For their Toolkit project, young people from the faith-based youth group The Zone collected stories about residents’ green practices.
They were trained by Field Museum anthropologists to use story collecting tools such as visual collages depicting Chicago residents taking climate-friendly actions, like turning off lights and recycling.
The youth worked with an artist and a Web developer to turn the stories into a mural and a website that showcase residents “going green.”
The community’s green stories also inspired the imagery on two ceramic planters created by youth at the South Chicago Art Center.
